  • Bhangra in the Clubs of New YorkBhangra breaks out in the Clubs of New York
    Basement Bhangra has become a monthly celebration at the Manhattan nightclub Sounds of Brazil, known as SOBs. Started by the DJ Rhekha Malhotra, who is known for mixing hip-hop tracks with South Asian beats, the event has popularized the lively Punjabi folk music and dance known as bhangra in New York and beyond. In Seattle, the Baltic Room and the Mirabeau Room now both feature a bhangra night, often playing Bollywood pop in addition to Punjabi folk jams.

  • The first Bhangra-influenced Timbaland track to be released was Missy Elliott's 2001 hit single, "Get Ur Freak On" on Miss Ellipt's So Addictive.
    Starting in 2000, Timbaland began incorporating Bhangra elements into his compositions, specifically the tumbi sound (a plucked string instrument playing a single note in a rhythmic way).

So-called "Bollywood" movies made in India are often shown in America as well. And many classes around the country teach Indian dances.

  • Shania Twain, the most successful female solo artist of all time, has caught the Asian bug!
    Drawing inspiration from the Asian subcontinent, Shania and her production team created an entirely separate production of her album, in the form of the 'Blue Mixes' - Asian and Eastern influenced versions of the album "Up!".

  • Jay-ZJay-Z raps a remix of Panjabi MC's bhangra hit "Mundian to Bach Ke"
    This song is called "Beware" because the original title translates roughtly to "Beware of the Boys" -- its original intent was to warn impressionable young girls away from rowdies and hooligans. It's actually a five-year-old song, a hit in the UK that then caught fire in Germany and sold 100,000 copies in one week.

    After the success of Panjabi MC, Bhangra Knights made the Top 10 List and Craig David's bhangra remix of Rise & Fall got to number 2 in the charts.

  • Britney Spears has turned to Indian bhangra rhythms for her comeback song out later this year
    The song featured Spears singing and rapping over music and rhythms from rural India and has been remixed by British Asian producer Rishi Rich - himself celebrating a top 20 hit in the UK this month with Dance With You (Nachna Tere Naal).

  • Ashanti sings for Chadha in "Bride and Prejudice"
    R&B star Ashanti made a brief appearance in Gurinder Chadha's musical take on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and also sings in the movie.
